Around 15-17% of the original forest cover has been lost. If deforestation exceeds 20–25%, a tipping point will be reached, where the rainforest’s water cycle could collapse, releasing 150–200 billion tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere, decimating biodiversity, and disrupting global weather systems.
